Political scientist Bernd H\u00fcttemann, who serves as the Vice President of the European Movement International, said that the decision to delay the deadline was largely in the interests of both the EU and Germany \u2013 although the longer-term consequences are unclear.<\/p>\n

\u201cA delay doesn\u2019t surprise us because many stakeholders are happy that we don\u2019t have to see the real consequences of a real Brexit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

“Everyone knows that a no-deal Brexit would be harmful.”<\/p>\n

This led to relief \u2013 a feeling which was most likely shared by many on both sides of the Channel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like in life, when you are getting ready to jump \u2013 you really have to jump \u2013 but then you don\u2019t have to jump,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Schadenfreude? No, I\u2019d say more like Fremdsch\u00e4men\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overall, H\u00fcttemann said the view in Germany was that British institutions \u2013 formerly viewed positively \u2013 had lost legitimacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are really surprised,” he told The Local. “For a long time people thought the British way of politics was a good one. Unlike other parts of European politics which were seen as bureaucratic and boring, British politics were seen positively,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBritish politics have lost tremendously in the eyes of the German public. They\u2019ve now fallen behind the European Union in terms of credibility. Now Brussels seems to be much more reasonable than London, which is very odd in Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n

H\u00fcttemann said the feeling towards Brexit was not one of Schadenfreude – the German word for taking pleasure in the misfortune of others \u2013 but one of Fremdsch\u00e4men <\/i>\u2013 or the embarrassment felt for someone who has embarrassed themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have a word for Fremdsch\u00e4men<\/i> in English? No? Well that\u2019s why you have Brexit,\u201d H\u00fcttemann said.<\/p>\n

H\u00fctteman agreed with the assessment of London\u2019s Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0which said the \u2018conventional\u2019 German view is that Brexit is \u201ca stupid mistake which will cost the UK dearly\u201d.<\/p>\n

However he said that while the reaction of British institutions to the Brexit process has been surprising, the outcome of leaving the EU was in some ways predictable given the politics of the UK, which often uses Brussels as a “scapegoat”.<\/p>\n
