The narcissistic Elon Musk, infatuated with Trump, had previously killed the Twitter bird with a simple X. But the butterfly of Bluesky won\u2019t be easily stifled. It\u2019s decentralized like <a href=\"https:\/\/joinmastodon.org\/\">Mastodon<\/a>, but still professionally managed. Especially in my work related to European politics, Twitter was a central place for exchange. With over 7,000 followers, I may not have been at the top, but I still managed to reach beyond the usual bubbles in politics, academia, and journalism. I look back nostalgically at my Twitter history. During the financial crisis, there was no better platform for intelligent networking. The unnecessary Brexit, in particular, significantly invigorated the European political discourse. Berlin&#8217;s journalist bubbles were suddenly no longer important. You could communicate excellently between Brussels , the national capitals, but also with Maastricht, Florence, and Tartu. The contributions of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simonjhix\">Simon Hix<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonPatz\">Ron Patz<\/a>. who created the hashtag #EuCo for the European Council, were legendary.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Set_Twitter_Apart_from_Other_Social_Media_Platforms\"><\/span>What Set Twitter Apart from Other Social Media Platforms?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Twitter was the democratic among the channels. Networking and mutual optimization were more important than mere show-off, as we unfortunately see more and more in post-Bologna universities and PR schools. Posting, influencing, and engaging were also important on Twitter, but there was always a certain democratic collective intelligence. Bubbles on Twitter were more like a pluralistic foam bath. Twitter was a square, not a tower, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niallferguson.com\/\">Niall Ferguson<\/a> described it.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Then_Came_the_Post-Fascist_Musk%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Then Came the Post-Fascist Musk&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>An authoritarian narcissist killed Twitter. I am still on [X](https:\/\/x.com), but I am clearly preparing my eXodus. The first step is securing the good times of Twitter. Downloading all my tweets since October 2008 made me nostalgic but also determined to move on. But where to emigrate?<\/p>\n<p>I first gave <a href=\"https:\/\/joinmastodon.org\/\">Mastodon<\/a> a chance. Wonderfully decentralized, but somehow the mammoth didn\u2019t move&#8230; I stayed afloat with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/berndhuettemann\/?locale=de_DE\">LinkedIn<\/a>, but it remained a Facebook for careerists&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Second_Chance_I_Gave_to_Bluesky\"><\/span>The Second Chance I Gave to Bluesky<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I only got the chance through a delayed invitation. I stayed offended and skeptical for a long time in the blue sky. But at least, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/mackuba.eu\/2024\/02\/21\/bluesky-guide\/\">very good guide for Bluesky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But since this summer, I\u2019ve been feeling the old Twitter vibe again. Initially, Bluesky was a purely green bubble with a few European academic sprinklings and Christian Democratic free spirits. The key to Bluesky\u2019s success is Musk himself. His statements, such as claiming a \u201ccivil war is inevitable\u201d after the racist attacks on open-minded England, have led to a massive exodus from X to Bluesky. Slowly, the EU bubble is awakening with <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/hashtag\/EUSky\">#EUSky<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/hashtag\/EurSky\">#EurSky<\/a>. As with Twitter, it is the Anglosaxons who are promoting the decentralized European discourse through social media.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Game_Changer_for_Me_Michiel_van_Hulten\"><\/span>The Game Changer for Me: Michiel van Hulten<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Former MEP and head of <a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.eu\/\">Transparency International EU<\/a> in Brussels, his <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/starter-pack\/mvanhulten.bsky.social\/3l2at427cpe2w\">Starter Packs EU Policy I<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/starter-pack\/mvanhulten.bsky.social\/3l2btrk4urz2n\">EU Policy Pack II<\/a>, later <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/starter-pack\/mvanhulten.bsky.social\/3l2mwktp3lq22\">MEPs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/starter-pack\/mvanhulten.bsky.social\/3l2bsa5crvb2z\">EU Bubble Journalist<\/a>, were an excellent booster for my European job in the blue \ud83e\udd8b sky. Just visit and follow everyone.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Bluesky_Makes_Sense\"><\/span>Why Bluesky Makes Sense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This became clear to me through the brilliant special edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/quietriotpod.bsky.social\/post\/3l2m44tyek62w\">podcast Quiet Riot on Bluesky with Rose<\/a> \u2013 highly recommended.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/netzwerk-ebd.de\/\">EBD Network<\/a>, we are currently preparing a campaign against X. The over 230 member organisations in the #EBDNetzwerk should soon no longer use X. But also the federal government and European institutions should no longer be impressed by Musk\u2019s investments. X promotes fascist movements.
